Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus Essential Oil (EEO)

Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus radiate

Known Uses

Eucalyptus globulus (also known as Tasmanian blue) is an antiseptic and an analgesic. Eucalyptus radiate is one of the most fragrant of all the Eucalyptus oil and has strong antibacterial, antiviral, and expectorant properties. It is often used in diffusers as well as topically for the flue, sinusitis, and bronchitis.

It is generally used as an analgesic, antiseptic, deodorant, expectorant, and to kill parasites. Has a stimulating effect on the nervous system, can relieve depression and lethargy. EEO is considered an effective therapy for respiratory illnesses. It is said to relieve muscular aches and pains associated with colds and flu, clears lung phlegm, improves breathing function, and improves digestive health.

History

The Eucalyptus is native to Australia. The Aborigines employed it as a general cure-all. The 300 different species were used for everything from paper, to mulch, and to fight malaria. It was discovered that Eucalyptus oil could be converted into a gas to light homes, hotels, and shops. During WW I, Eucalyptus Oil was in great demand to control a meningitis outbreak and the influenza epidemic of 1919. Today, the major EEO producing countries are China, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Russia, and Chile. China is the world’s top producer of EEO today.

Warnings

Eucalyptus Oil should be diluted in a carrier oil for topical application and for inhalation in a diffuser. Should only be taken internally if directed by a health care professional. A 3.5-milliliter dose of undiluted eucalyptus oil can be fatal, according to Medline Plus. Whether it is taken topically or orally, people who use a toxic amount of this oil may experience a wide variety of symptoms, including abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness or muscle weakness.

Clove Essential Oil

Clove Essential Oil

Eugenia caryophyllata is indigenous to the Maluku islands of Indonesia

Known Uses

Clove essential oil (CEO) is commonly used as an antiseptic for oral infections and to kill a wide variety of microbes. Due to its numbing effect, clove oil is used widely for alleviating pain associated with many dental afflictions. Clove oil can even slow tooth decay (decalcification) and help to remineralize teeth. It is also a great breath freshener with its distinctive aroma and its antimicrobial properties!

University of Buenos Aires, Argentina researchers found that clove has the greatest effect over E. coli, Staph aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, bacterias that can lead to pneumonia and skin infections. Due to its effectiveness in killing Staph aureus, it is useful in treating acne. Mix a few drops of clove essential oil with a small amount of honey and a couple of drops of tea tree oil to create a fabulous facial wash that is a natural remedy for acne.

CEO is considerably high in manganese (126.4%) – which is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis. That high level of manganese also makes clove essential oil helpful in treating premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and anemia; CEO contains a substance (eugenol) that is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Low doses of eugenol have been shown to protect the liver against ischemia/reperfusion injury (a known cause of liver disease). Eugenol reverses inflammation, and slows apoptosis (cell death). As an anti-bacterial and anti-fungal it is used in dental care to slow tooth erosion and for relieving the pain and discomfort associated with various dental disorders.

Clove essential oil has the highest ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) value of any substance - 1,078,700 units (almost 3X higher than Myrrh). ORAC is a measurement of the antioxidant value in foods, molecules that reverse the destruction caused by free radicals including cancer and death to cells in the body. Its high ORAC value makes it a great antioxidant and aids in fighting and protecting against many diseases.

Clove oil can bring relief to those plagued by vomitting and nausea. It can also treat indigestion, hiccups, and excess gassiness. It can treat headaches by increasing blood circulation, therefore reducing tension. It also effectively treats respiratory ailments and sore throats as well as shores up the body against colds and flus, including sinus infections and bronchitis. It purifies and cleanses the blood and helps control blood sugar levels. It also fights fungal infections, including those found in the digestive track.

COE is an effective insect repellent. Its strong odor keeps away many bugs including the most annoying mosquito.

Its warming and spicy qualities make clove oil a perfect addition to a massage oil blend. As an aphrodisiac, clove essential oil is a powerful stress reliever. You can sit back and relax as it does amazing things for your muscles and skin as well as you emotional and mental well-being.

In addition, the aroma and flavor of clove essential oil is very popular during the winter holiday season. It can be added to favorite recipes like pumpkin pie or gingerbread cookies, difused in your home for a delightful scent, and infused into facial scrubs, lotions and deodorants as well.

History

The Chinese have used clove for more than 2,000 years as a fragrance and spice. Traditionally, it has been used to ward off bed bugs. Clove oil may have helped protect people from the Bubonic Plague during the Middle Ages. Since spreading to the international community, it has been added to numerous products for agricultural, cosmetic and industrial purposes. The greatest asset of CEO, however, is related to its widespread application in homeopathic medicine. Because it contains such an elevated level of eugenol, clove essential oil (CEO) has established itself as exceptionally resourceful. It has been comprehensively analyzed as an compelling alternative to many current medical treatments. Clove is widely used today in Chinese and Indian cultures because of its amazing flavor, aroma, and healing properties.

Warnings

The chemical eugenol found in clove essential oil can keep blood from clotting properly by slowing down the clotting process. Clove oil may negatively affect people with bleeding disorders causes them to bleed more. If you have a surgery scheduled, make sure you stop taking clove oil two weeks or more prior to that time because it could cause bleeding. It has a blood thinning effect.

Clove oil can reduce blood glucose levels, so use caution if you are diabetic.

Do not overuse clove oil orally. It can bring injury to the gums, teeth, mucous membranes, and skin.

Clove essential oil is probably unsafe for children to take by mouth. It can cause serious side effects including liver damage, seizures, and imbalances of fluids in the body.

Avoid using clove essential oil if you are pregnant or breast-feeding as there are not enough studies out there to show the effects that it may have.

plant therapy reviewPlant Therapy scored a 22.5 out of a possible 30 points. Each company is given a score based on 6 main qualities and an extra point if they are a Fair Trade company. You can read a full description of our rating system for a more thorough explanation. Plant Therapy made it into the top ten best essential oils companies that we reviewed and we highly recommend their products.

Quality

Plant Therapy has several lines of products aimed at providing the best oils for the best purposes. They do have an Organic certified line of oils as well as a kid safe line. Some of the farmers they work with that do grow organically have not become organic certified due to the cost. For this reason only oils that have come from organic certified farms are marked organic yet others have come from organically grown plants.

Plant Therapy works directly with world renowned essential oil expert, Robert Tisserand, and several analytical laboratories. Oils are sent to one of several third-party laboratories where they undergo multiple tests including Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (also known as GC/MS testing). If they suspect that some of what looks like a natural constituent of an oil might be a synthetic addition, they use chiral analysis to find out if it is in fact, a natural constituent or a synthetic addition. They provide access to the GC/MS test for each batch they produce accessible from the products page.

They are very transparent with information regarding why they have made decisions in how their oils are made. For example their Bergamot oil is the only oil they carry that is fractionally distilled or redistilled. The reason they have chosen this path is because Bergamot is a highly phototoxic essential oil. Plant Therapy’s Bergamot is known as bergapten free. This means that the chemical constituent that makes Bergamot so phototoxic, bergapten, has been removed from our Bergamot making it safe to use in the sun. Their care for their customers which also means the quality of their oils can been seen in their creation of a Kid Safe line of oils making it easy for parents to choose the right oils for their children.

Price

We compared the prices of a set amount of 5 different essential oils among the companies being reviewed focusing on price alone regardless of quality rating. Plant Therapy scored high in our cost analysis of 5 different essential oils. Considering the high quality of their oils this is an even more excellent value.

Variety

Plant Therapy did not have as large a selection as some of the other companies we were comparing them to but it is important to point out that they have a kid safe line which is unique and helpful to parents.

Website

The website was somewhat busy with links to the same things in multiple places but overall a good experience. It was still easy to find what I was looking for. They offer a daily deal on the website which was something we did not see other companies doing. The actual product pages are designed in a more minimalistic way then other areas of the site such as the home page and were easier to digest. All information regarding the product was readily available from the product page including the Test Reports.

Signing up for an account was easy. The account side of the website is very nice and you can save items for later by adding them to your wishlist. They also have a quick order feature that pulls up a form where you can add items quickly without having to navigate all over the website.

Another thing they offer is an Aromatherapy Marketplace that features handcrafted items such as necklace diffusers and Carrying Bags. This is in addition to their Accessories section which features more mass produced products.

We were not sure why there is not a link to their blog in the navigation bar but you can get there from the footer or by scrolling down on the homepage. This is the main source of education on the site so it would be able to access it from the nav bar.

The site loads quickly and adapts for different devices so it will look great on your phone, tablet, or desktop.

Education

The main source for education on the website is through the blog. The product pages did have descriptions and directions for use as well. The blog is kept up to date and contains good information. They have some nice categories like Make Your Own Monday, Wisdom Wednesday, and Feature Friday. The educational aspect was not as feature rich or organized as well but there nevertheless was a wealth of information in the blog if you dig for it.

Customer Service

Phone and Email Support

When we first called we had to leave a message. They called back within two hours and were very helpful and answered all of our questions.

Refund Policy

They offer free shipping for all U.S. Retail customers. Plant Therapy is dedicated to customer satisfaction. They offer a 90 day 100% money back guarantee. U.S. customers will receive a return label for free return shipping. Keep in mind that this is good for purchases made at www.planttherapy.com only.

What Others Are Saying

I was hard pressed to find any negative reviews about Plant Therapy. It seems like they are doing a great job and people generally love them. Many people claimed that their oils worked great for them. Some said they did not feel they were as good as the brand they were already using but this was common with most oil companies we reviewed. People are different and respond differently to different things. Blends are made slightly differently with each company. Overall people seemed happy with their experience with Plant Therapy.

We came across a post about Plant Therapy where they responded to a customer who was doing third party testing on oils and found that a sample of their Tea Tree oil was not in compliance. The response from Plant Therapy was amazing. They committed to "immediately go over our quality control measures and see how this could have happened and take corrective action right away." They pulled all of their Tea Tree Oil off of their website and from amazon until they could obtain a new batch. They also asked to have their latest batch included in her next test. The next tests that were preformed showed that they were in compliance. This is the sign of a company that really cares about their oils and their customers as the actions they took (pulling all their Tea Tree oil off the shelves) cost them a lot of money but also gained the trust of their customers and resulted in many new ones. Their decision in this process gained our trust as well which is why we recommend them.

Amoils / Healing Natural Oils Review

Amoils (Healing Natural Oils) Review

amoils reviewAmoils scored a 23 out of a possible 30 points. Each company is given a score based on 6 main qualities and an extra point if they are a Fair Trade company. You can read a full description of our rating system for a more thorough explanation. Amoils made it into the top ten best essential oils companies that we reviewed and we highly recommend their products.

Quality

There is not a whole lot of information on their website regarding the quality of their oils. They do state that their products contain no pesticides, herbicides or any synthetic chemicals. They also make it clear that their oils are not tested on animals and no animal products are used in manufacturing the oils. While they do state that they use only the finest natural products, focusing on ethical production and using the best quality, natural ingredients available, there is no mention of any of their products being organic or where specifically they are harvested. We did send an email asking for some clarification on informations regarding quality such as their distillation process and if they offered any certified organic oils and are currently awaiting their response.

You can tell a lot about the quality of an oil based on if it works or not and one thing that we found out about Amoils is that they have tons of reviews from people sharing how their specific formulas worked and these reviews are not just on their own website.

Price

Amoils pricing was very competitive. They were not cheap by any means but a good price for a quality oil.

Variety

Amoils does not have a huge variety of oils to choose from. At the time of this review they have only 7 single oils. Their strength is in their blends. They have 33 blends that are named according to the health issues they address.

Website

We really like their website. It is organized well and love the way you shop for oils based on the health benefits or health issues you want to address. We also loved the way they have a close up image of the label on the bottle listing the ingredients in the blends and when you hover the image it zooms so you can easily read it. Google verified reviews for the product are accessible right from the product page so you ca hear reports of if the product is actually working for people or not.

The website is clean and easy to look at. This site is so well organized it is hard to realize the wealth of information the site actually contains. Much of the information is hidden under slides and tabs making the vast amount of information easy to access without making the site feel cluttered. The article section has a good amount of information and the blog has even more. It is nice that the blog and the articles are all contained within the site instead of sending you somewhere else for becoming more informed which was the case on other essential oil sites we visited.

The site loads quickly and adapts for different devices so it will look great on your phone, tablet, or desktop.

Education

There are several ways you can become more informed through their website and materials. They have a free 72 page guide that showcases their products, how to use them, and even offers recipes. They also have a section on their website where they have a list of suggested courses and recommended organizations for further education. You can also sign up for their newsletters as well as visit their blog which has a wealth of information from some very knowledgable individuals. While there are a ton of materials they point you to and connect you with, the education materials are not organized all in one place which would be nice.

Customer Service

Phone and Email Support

*Review of their phone and email support is coming soon and may affect their overall rating.

Refund Policy

Their refund policy is excellent. You have a 90 day money back guarantee. If you are unhappy for any reason, simply send back the bottle(s) within 90 days from date of sale and they will refund your product purchase.

What Others Are Saying

We were impressed with the amount of reviews and positive customer feedback. They have over 700 reviews on reseller ratings alone and they had an overall score of 9.67 out of 10. There were mixed reviews of certain products such as the skin tag remover where people were saying it did not work for them but then we came across customers who claimed it was the only thing that did work. Overall there were tons of reviews of happy customers that had great results for many of their products and the negative reviews were few by comparison.

Mountain Rose Herbs Review

Mountain Rose Herbs Review

mountain rose herbsMountain Rose Herbs scored a 25 out of a possible 30 points. Each company is given a score based on 6 main qualities and an extra point if they are a Fair Trade company. Mountain Rose Herbs is one of the best essential oils companies that we came across and we highly recommend their products.

Quality

Their selection includes certified organic, fair trade, ethically wild harvested, & Kosher certified botanical products. Their oils are are steam distilled. It is clear that they care about the quality of their oils by the ways they have made themselves accountable to third parties. There is a page on their website dedicated to Certifications where you can read about their OTCO & USDA ORGANIC PROGRAM as well as their commitments to be NON-GMO PROJECT VERIFIED, EARTH KOSHER, EARTHSHARE, FAIR FOR LIFE, SALMON-SAFE, and have converted to 100% renewable energy through CARBONFUND. This is a company that cares not only about the quality of their oils and herbs but about the quality of our world and the lives of others.

They pride themselves on providing certified organic or pesticide-free plant products that are sustainably harvested and vibrant, tasty, potent, and consistent herbal goods with the aim of exceeding customer expectations. They seek to provide a product that is proven safe through laboratory analysis. Their first choice when sourcing herbs is always certified organic. If organic isn’t available, then they choose an ethically wildharvested or "cultivated without chemicals" option. Before the products are shipped to their facilities they require a "pre-ship" sample for analysis. When the herbs they ordered arrive at their facility, it is immediately quarantined for QC review. They extract samples for immediate testing in their laboratory. Before any product is made available to the public it has undergone rigorous testing ensuring the highest quality for their customers.

Information regarding their sourcing, testing, handling, industry involvement is made readily available on their website and upon your request, will even provide copies of their organic certificate, kosher certificate, certificates of analysis, pesticide residue tests, GCMS printouts, and MSDS forms when available. They really do want you to know the high quality of their oils and herbs.

Price

We compared the prices of a set amount of 5 different essential oils among the companies being reviewed focusing on price alone regardless of quality rating. While it is usually true that something that is higher quality costs more in this case Mountain Rose Herbs breaks the rules. They were priced more reasonably than companies with less quality control. Take into account that they are also fair trade and it is hard to understand how they still maintain such competitive pricing.

Variety

Although they do have a great variety of oils (113 as of last count) in comparison to some of the other companies they did not have as much variety. There were less blends than some of the other companies we reviewed so that was reflected in their score. With all that said they do have a great variety to choose from.

Website

We really like the website. It is well organized, not cluttered, and easy to find what you are looking for. Even the menu has nice imagery making it even easier to visually identify what you are looking for. Most sites just feature a text menu and try to pack too much information into a small amount of space. This site feels like breathing fresh air.

In addition to having a large selection of products that are organized well, they also offer monthly discounts and specials so keep an eye on those for special savings. The ordering process is very simple and you can store items in your account for later. In the footer of the website there is a well organized site map for those interested in education or finding out more about the company and their practices.

The only area where we felt the website could have been more useful is access to education related to individual oils and blends. It would be nice on the individual product pages to have the uses and other educational information such as recipes easily accessible instead of the extra step of having to search.

The site loads quickly and adapts for different devices so it will look great on your phone, tablet, or desktop.

Customer Service

Phone Support

Our experience with Mountain Rose Herbs customer service was great. If you contact them by phone they have a good answering machine service that allows you to get to the exact info you need but also does not give you the runaround since you can press 0 at any time to speak with a real person. It took less than a minute to talk with someone and would have been quicker if I did not wait to listen to all the options. They answered all my questions and had good knowledge of the company.

Refund Policy

There is a thorough return policy clearly outlined on their website. You have up to 60 days from the invoice date to return merchandise. All shipping charges become the sole responsibility of the customer, unless it is the error of Mountain Rose Herbs but they will refund the full amount of your purchase provided that the product was not tampered with or blended with another product. For other policies please see their website.

What Others Are Saying

There were mixed reviews that we came across. Many people gave them 5 stars and were very happy while others had a polar opposite experience. The reviews that were negative centered around issues regarding shipping and products being out of stock or not included in their order. There were also some negative reviews based upon certain oils smelling like other oils instead of the oils they were supposed to smell like. Customers said they were refunded for the cost of the product but not for shipping in certain cases and that it became increasingly hard to get responses from customer support. Others that had returns had a seamless experience.
